There have been vast improvements in LED technology in recent times giving it a great adaptability for use in a huge array of different applications.
The problem, up to now, has been the inability to produce an LED lamp to take the place of conventional tungsten fillament lamps which have been a major part of how we illuminate everthing. Existing LED lamps have not really been bright enough for what is required or have given an unsatisfactory colour rendition.
Most LEDs that have been around for a while give out the cold, unwelcoming "blue-white" effect, really only widely used for decking or walkway illumination, but with the progression of this technology, there are now LED replacements for the "warm-white" tungsten light that is required in most situations.
The other very important facts about LED lamps are extremely low heat levels that are generated and the comparative low energy levels at which they run.
Conventional tungsten fillament lamps generate around 85% heat and and give out around 15% light, meaning that air conditioning has to work harder to stabilise a set working temperature, whereas a similar LED product gives around 90% light and the remaining 10% heat output.
As an example, a standard low voltage MR16 tungsten halogen lamp rated at 50 watts is not only too hot to touch whilst running but is very expensive in energy costs.
A similar LED lamp which has 24 chips, runs virtually cold, is available as an LED GU10 or LED MR16 consuming just 5 watts and giving a near equivalent light output of 50 watts.
Consider the vast savings in energy where the installation has, say, 100 conventional MR16 or GU10 tungsten halogen lamps ?
Think Green !
We are all encouraged these days to "do our bit for society" by saving energy where possible, "improving our Carbon Footprint" and with LED lighting this can be achieved, as well as making massive savings on our energy expenditure.
As with all inovative products there are capital cost implications but it is very easy to work out the relatively short "pay-back" time involved after which you can, in effect, be in profit.
